Using Flexible Learning Option Workboxes (FLOW), the Diocese of Cubao Educational System (DOCES) has continued its mission to provide Catholic education to students amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a webinar titled “Let Learning Flow: Building Stronger Home-School Collaboration in the New Normal,” DOCES Superintendent Rev. Fr. Raymond Joseph Arre explained that FLOW consists of workboxes that represent the priorities of DOCES such as the delivery of instruction, faith formation, and safety amid the pandemic.
For the delivery of instruction, DOCES utilized two flexible learning options: offline learning and online instruction.
The use of Portable Learning Tools is the main element for offline learning. PLTs are physical learning materials to be done monthly at home, such as learning activity sheets, modules, and flash drives containing pre-recorded video lessons. PLTs can also refer to the learning materials themselves.
St. Joseph Catholic School (SJCS) Principal Dr. Ma. Teresa Sandoval said that DOCES offered the use of PLTs to resolve concerns that students without internet connectivity cannot partake in the school year.

She further discussed that PLTs accord with the goal of the Dynamic Learning Program (DLP) implemented in DOCES schools, which is to promote independent learning, so students can easily adapt to the modality.
Addressing questions on the supervision of learners under offline learning, Dr. Sandoval said that teachers can still give students feedback through emails and online messaging, as well as through text messages and calls for those who cannot connect to the internet. Likewise, parents and students can communicate with the teachers using those.
Conversely, students enrolled under online instruction use the internet as their primary medium for learning.

DOCES CI Coordinator and Immaculate Conception Cathedral School (ICCS) Principal Mr. Ferdinand Garcia discussed that online instruction uses synchronous and asynchronous sessions to facilitate students’ learning.
Synchronous, real-time classes are conducted via video conferencing applications such as Google Meet and Zoom, while PLTs teachers upload activities during asynchronous classes.
Mr. Garcia clarified that PLTs, mainly learning activities and modules, are still the primary instructional tools even for online learners; online instruction complements PLTs and eases communication among teachers, students, and parents.
On the other hand, the safety and security workbox in flow includes measures to protect personnel and people who visit the school from COVID-19 such as physical distancing, wearing face masks, providing sanitation stations, and regularly disinfecting school facilities.
In line with that, enrollment and financial operations went digital. Moreover, the school reduced tuition fees with minimal down payment upon enrollment and scholarships.
DOCES has also used FLOW to continue building faith and wellness by conducting Masses and prayer devotions via Facebook live and providing online counseling.
